The West End is no stranger to musicals that take their cues from the hit songs of some famous bands, whether it is ABBA as represented in Mamma Mia! or The Kinks as represented in Sunny Afternoon. However, come July 2015, the Arts Theatre will now be the home of another as it presents a production that features the hit songs of the band Green Day alongside a story of meaning in a world affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

American Idiot is a successful Broadway musical that earned numerous awards and nominations during its run in New York from 2010. This included two Tony Awards for Best Scenic Design In A Musical and Best Lighting Design Of A Musical.

The story itself takes its cues from the Green Day concept album of the same name and follows on three young men – Johnny, Will and Tunny – who are dissatisfied with their lives in a post-9/11 world. While Will has a pregnant wife, Johnny turns to drugs and Tunny joins the military before heading off to war. Along the way we hear renditions of numerous Green Day songs plucked from albums American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, ranging from Wake Me Up When September Ends and 21 Guns to Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) and more.

Whilst direction for the musical comes from Racky Plews, the cast will include Amelia Lily as the character called Whatershername. She is best known for her appearance on the 2011 series of The X Factor, where she placed third, though she has since appeared on the stage in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat on a UK tour. Since her time on the television talent show she has also released songs like You Bring Me Joy, Party Over and California.

The production also joins other jukebox musicals like Thriller Live and Jersey Boys, which celebrate the works of Michael Jackson and Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons respectively. It is the first time it has been seen in the West End, though audiences have previously witness the production on a UK tour.

American Idiot opens its doors at the Arts Theatre from Wednesday 22nd July 2015 (previews from Friday 17th July 2015).
