Catherine Tate is among those heading to the Menier Chocolate Factory to appear in the latest London production of Stephen Sondheim’s Assassins. As part of a cast that includes Carly Bawden, Simon Lipkin, Mike McShane, Andy Nyman and David Roberts she will perform under the direction of the acclaimed Jamie Lloyd in a show that explores the attempted and successful assassinations of US presidents. It is a musical that has been seen on numerous stages worldwide and now makes its latest appearance in the capital more than 20 years since its first UK run at the Donmar Warehouse.
Assassins is a well known musical that delves into the many attempts at taking out the President of the United States, from those that failed to take them out – as was the case with Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagon – to those that succeeded – as was the cast with Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, William McKinley and John F Kennedy. It is a dark subject matter, but one that is brought to life onstage with moments of levity and it is this successful marriage that earned it numerous Tony Awards in the 1990s.
Those Tony Awards were awarded to its New York production early in that decade, but it wouldn’t be long before it made its way across the Atlantic to appear at the Donmar Warehouse under the direction of Sam Mendes. It would later return to a London stage with a run at the Union Theatre in 2010.
Those with theatre tickets will undoubtedly be eager to see Catherine Tate take on a lead role, following her numerous television parts and prior theatre experience. She is best known for television’s The Catherine Tate Show and Doctor Who, the latter of which saw her portray the Doctor’s companion Donna Noble, and she has also amassed credits in Sixty Six Books at the Bush Theatre, Much Ado About Nothing at the Wyndham’s Theatre and Season’s Greetings at the National Theatre, among others.
Opening during the venue’s 10th anniversary year (which saw the revival of opening show Fully Committed and the return of the popular Forbidden Broadway), Assassins runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Friday 21st November 2014 and continues into the New Year.
