Barbershopera Apocalypse No!

Every year a host of shows find their ways to the capital and feature various young and talented performers trying to make a name for themselves. Many of them are plucked from the Edinburgh Festival Fringe earlier in the year, where they get to show London theatre audiences what caused such a rave in the Scottish capital. One show will be making its way to the Trafalgar Studios 2 in the New Year having wowed audiences a year earlier with “Babershopera II” and it takes the form of “Barbershopera – Apocalypse No!”

Last year the team brought us a story of a Catalan matador hoping to win over the locals in a sleepy Norfolk town. In “Apocalypse No!” they deal with a more chaotic theme as God summons the four horsemen of the apocalypse to bring destruction to the Earth. It seems that everyone has grown tired of humans, but when the horseman accidentally employ the serviced of struggling teacher Beth instead of Death, their plan may be harder to carry out. Beth, horrified by the task at hand, must convince them that Earth is worth saving after all.

Mixing comedy, barbershop and opera, it is a unique show that is likely to stand-out amongst the crowd when it runs at Trafalgar Studios 2 in the New Year.

The production was penned by Rob Castell and Tom Sadler, with the cast including the pair, Laura Stubbs and Pete Sorel-Cameron. The production is then directed by Sarah Tipple, who will clearly be hoping to repeat the success found in last year’s show and the run at the Scottish capital. It ran at the Pleasance Dome venue during the August festival, the same location as 2009’s and over the years the project has earned awards that include Best Lyrics at the MTM Awards 2009.

The show will run during the early evening through January and into February, with performances beginning at 7:15pm, whilst the show “The Fitzrovia Radio Hour” will run for the same dates later in the evening.

Barbershopera makes a welcome return to the West End with “Apocalypse No!” making its appearance at Trafalgar Studios 2 from Tuesday 11th January 2011 to Saturday 5th February 2011.
