In 2011 audiences all over the world will be gearing up to welcome the Caped Crusader to an arena nearby as Batman Live embarks on an anticipated international tour. No fan of the DC comics hero will want to miss out and following recent successes such as the blockbuster movie The Dark Knight there are plenty of Batman fans out there waiting to see a brand new story take to the stage, complete with familiar characters and some of the most famous villains in comic book history. So in a year in which well known movie characters are already making their way to the stage, from Shrek The Musical to Ghost The Musical in the West End, Batman will arrive to deliver a spectacle like no other.
The show is set to appear on an international tour, which will include a wide range of dates in the United Kingdom, beginning in Manchester at the huge MEN Arena and progressing to Belfast’s Odyssey Arena. But amongst the dates is a stop off at London’s world famous O2 Arena, where London theatre audiences will be able to witness the stunts and special effects promised as part of the spectacle. It will be the most exciting live event at the O2 since Doctor Who Live appeared in 2010.
And a brand new story is also promised as part of the package, though Batman fans are likely to feel right at home with the tale as it unfolds. It features an array of well known names from the Batman universe, including his alter-ego Bruce Wayne and friends like Alfred the Butler and Robin, plus famous villains such as The Joker, Catwoman, The Riddler and The Penguin. Then there are the settings, with Gotham City brought to life onstage in addition to locations like Wayne Manor and the Batcave, plus the enclave that houses some horrifying foes in the form of Arkham Asylum.
Alongside Superman, Batman is perhaps the best known name in the comic book world, having been originally introduced to audiences in 1939 in issue number 27 of Detective Comics. From the mind of Bob Kane and Bill Finger he would go on to appear in many more comics, in addition to the famous television series starring Adam West, plus movies such as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.
Now, thanks to creative director Anthony Van Laast (a choreographer who has also worked on Mamma Mia!, amongst others), Batman Live makes its appearance in London, with a run at the O2 Arena from Monday 29th August 2011 to Sunday 4th September 2011.
