Burt Bacharach is one of the last century’s legends of songwriting, with many of his songs enjoying pride of place in popular culture and known to audiences around the world.
Even if you are unfamiliar with the name Burt Bacharach, you will have heard his work in countless films and television shows, covered by an array of singers or initially performed by iconic stars.
So it is only right that the West End celebrates this influential artist as another in a long line of hit shows from the Menier Chocolate Factory transfers to Theatreland, taking up the space left by The 39 Steps at the Criterion Theatre.
Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined takes the well known tunes from the songwriter and turns them on their head, with Kyle Riabko composing brand new arrangements and then welcoming talented performers to present them onstage. The result is something that fans of Bacharach can enjoy young or old.
Such tunes include What The World Needs Now Is Love, Close To You, Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head, This Guy’s In Love With You, I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself and many more.
Bacharach has enjoyed decades in the spotlight and thanks to films like Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (which introduced the world to Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by Bacharach and Hal David), they continue to find a new audience. Many of his hit songs were put together for iconic performers like Tom Jones and The Carpenters, whilst various others have found new life when new television shows and films bring them back in to the spotlight (who could forget the rendition of What The World Needs Now Is Love from Austin Powers?)
And so it joins a host of other shows in the capital that base a stand-out West End musical around the hits of a famous recording artist. London theatre crowds can already get tickets to the Jersey Boys, celebrating Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons, Sunny Afternoon, attracting fans of The Kinks, and Thriller Live, celebrating Michael Jackson, and now they can add Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined to that list.
The production is directed by Steven Hoggett (choreographer of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time) and is produced by David Lane Seltzer.
Close To You: Bacharach Reimagined runs at the Criterion Theatre from Thursday 15th October 2015 (with previews beginning on Saturday 3rd October 2015).
