The musical Dessa Rose makes an appearance at Trafalgar Studios 2 this summer, with Cynthia Erivo returning to the West End for a starring role alongside Jon Robyns and under the direction of Andrew Keates.
The story takes audiences back to the American South of the 19th century and is based on the novel by Sherley Anne Williams. It was adapted to a musical stage by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, with the former penning the book and lyrics and the latter penning the music. The result has been something that has been celebrated on the other side of the Atlantic, with many award nominations to its name.
The story of acceptance takes audiences to 1847 and introduces us to two women – one black and one white – on their road to toleration during a time in which racial divide was prominent. It was first seen by audiences in New York back in 2005 and has since been seen across the United States, with this production in the West End marking its European premiere.
Cynthia Erivo has appeared in various well known shows in recent years and, as a result, has been tipped as a rising star. She appeared in I Can’t Sing! The X Factor Musical at the London Palladium, The Color Purple at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Sister Act The Musical on a UK tour and The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg at the Gielgud Theatre, among other productions.
The show appears in a year that also brings another musical dealing with racial themes as The Scottsboro Boys runs at the Garrick Theatre from October.
Dessa Rose, however, runs at the Trafalgar Studios 2 from Thursday 31st July 2014 (previews from Tuesday 29th July 2014).
