18-22 Greenside Place
The Edinburgh Playhouse is situated on Greenside Place, at the top of Leith Walk and close to the east end of Princes Street. This is less than 10 minute's walk from Waverley Station, 5 minutes walk from the bus station and on various major bus routes.
The classic movie “Dirty Dancing” had a successful adaptation in the West End as “Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage” at the Aldwych Theatre and its popularity proved that there is always going to be an audience for the production despite the original movie landing back in the 1980s. This will undoubtedly be proven once again during the Christmas season as the touring version finds itself in the Scottish capital for a run at the Edinburgh Playhouse.
Featuring an array of stand-out songs, some wonderful performances and unbeatable choreography, “Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage” is the best way of revisiting this timeless tale.
In “Dirty Dancing” those with theatre tickets will be introduced to the Houseman family, with its patriarch Mr Houseman and their daughter ‘Baby’ Houseman, the teenager at the heart of this tale of romance. Whilst on holiday in the Catskill Mountains she falls for the handsome dance instructor called Johnny, who teaches her some raunchy moves, and this riles up Mr Houseman, banning her from seeing him. Time will tell if their love can win out and with some outstanding songs like “I’ve Had the Time of My Life” and “Hey Baby” it should result in a stand-out show.
The production lands at the Edinburgh Playhouse on the back of a year that has seen it present its usual array of stand-out touring productions and live comedy. 2012 has also seen it welcome “Starlight Express”, “Oliver!” and “9 to 5 the Musical”, among others, and it shows that Scottish audiences have plenty to choose from when it comes to great musical theatre.
