In 2012 those picking up opera tickets for shows at the Royal Opera House will have the option of witnessing Mozart’s famous “Don Giovanni”, which is set to arrive at the venue in Covent Garden from January to February with Gerald Finley and Erwin Schrott both taking on the role of the titular seducer and Constantinos Carydis conducting. It forms part of a cycle of Mozart operas heading to the venue in the year of the London Olympics and is likely to attract considerable attention from opera aficionados in the capital. Other cast members include Hibla Gerzmava and Carmela Remigio as Donna Anna, plus Katarina Karnéus and Ruxundra Donose as Donna Elvira.
Don Giovanni is the seducer of women whose sexual endeavours show no sign of ending. But things come to a head when he murders a man and his statue invites itself for dinner. It was composed by Wolfgang Mozart, features a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte and first appeared in front of audiences in 1787 before going on to become one of the best known operas around, appearing on stages regularly all over the world.
“Don Giovanni” appears at the Royal Opera House from Saturday 21st January 2012 to Wednesday 29th February 2012.
