Back in the early 1980s audiences on Broadway were treated to the new musical from Henry Krieger and Tom Eyen. Dreamgirls, which chronicled the rise of a 1960s R&B act, took New York by storm and became a huge hit, eventually entertaining audiences across the States and around the world.
Now that magic finally lands in the West End, with Amber Riley set to take on the iconic role of Effie White on the stage of the Savoy Theatre. It will be a chance to witness a celebrated performer as the Glee star follows steps into the Shoes previously worn by stars likes Jennifer Holiday and Jennifer Hudson, who appeared in the original Broadway version and the film version respectively.
We take a step back in time for Dreamgirls as we are transported to the R&B era that brought us some stand-out songs and artists in the 1960s. Amongst all of this we meet The Dreams, an all-girl group who have emerged from Chicago and are on the road to the top. We witness their highs and lows as they navigate their way through a tough music industry and become huge stars.
But as this is a celebrated musical, audiences will not be headed to the Savoy Theatre without expecting some stand-out songs and they won’t be disappointed. The show features musical numbers like And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going, Got To Be Good Times and One Night Only, amongst others.
However, audiences will also be hoping to see the work of Amber Riley, who is known to crowds around the world for her role as Mercedes Jones in the hit US television series Glee The performer has various credits to her name, having worked as a singer, and was also a part of another US series in Dancing With The Stars.
But now she brings new life to the character of Effie White as she works under the direction of Casey Nicholaw, the American practitioner who has choreographed for Spamalot and directed Elf The Musical, amongst others.
The production runs at the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End from November 2016.
