Matthew Bourne’s popular 2005 dance production based on Tim Burton’s 1990 movie of the same name, Edward Scissorhands, returns to Sadler’s Wells for a brief run over the Christmas period, allowing audiences to return to this fantasy love story that captured imaginations worldwide.
The original movie introduced us to Edward, a boy created with scissors for hands in the late 1980s, and whilst a love story unfolds he also finds himself in the suburbs of the city, where the local community struggles to accept someone so different. Bourne’s contemporary dance version of the classic relocates the action to the 1950s, but the story is very much intact.
The production emerged in 2005 and has been seen all over the world, standing up as one of many famous pieces by Matthew Bourne, the Associate Artist of Sadler’s Wells. He is perhaps best known for devising Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, which was a controversial retelling of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet. However, he has also been contemporary dance versions of Sleeping Beauty, Mary Poppins, Cinderella and Dorian Gray, among others. For Edward Scissorhands, however, he earned a Drama Desk Award for his fantastic choreography.
On this occasion Dominic North and Liam Mower both share the role of Edward, having both made names for themselves in numerous previous productions in dance, musical theatre and beyond.
2014 is a good year to visit Sadler’s Wells and its West End outlet the Peacock Theatre, with the latter staging the likes of Shadowland and Mummenschanz - The Musicians Of Silence this year.
Meanwhile, Sadler’s Wells itself will be the home of Edward Scissorhands - A New Adventures Production from Tuesday 2nd December 2014.
