Follies is the famous musical by Stephen Sondheim that is a must-see whenever it is staged in the United Kingdom. Though it is not as famously and widely performed as some of his other shows, it remains a significant piece of musical theatre with many well known songs.
But perhaps one of the best ways of seeing this production is at one of the world’s most famous music venues as two special performances of the show take place at the Royal Albert Hall. Though it is better known for the annual Proms, plus other concerts throughout the years, the Hall has previously staged musicals such as The Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary Concert, and will lend a spectacular backdrop to this fantastic story.
Billed as a celebration of Sondheim, Follies In Concert will see a range of well known names take to the stage of the Royal Albert Hall, from Christopher Biggins to Anita Dobson, plus Alex Hanson, Russell Watson, Ruthie Henshall and Charlotte Page, to name but a few, whilst directing duties fall on Craig Revel Horwood.
Centring on the reunion of a musical revue called Weismann’s Follies, Follies In Concert introduces us to characters like Buddy, Sally, Phyllis and Benjamin as they head to an old Broadway theatre as their previous relationships and disagreements return to the fold. It features musical numbers such as Losing My Mind, Could I Leave You, Broadway Baby, Don’t Look At Me and I’m Still Here, amongst others.
For fans of Stephen Sondheim this is unmissable and appears in a year that also sees another of his shows, Gypsy, run at the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End.
Follies In Concert runs for an afternoon and evening performance at the Royal Albert Hall on Tuesday 28th April 2015.
