One of the most popular comedies of the 1990s is headed to the stage in London in 2016 as the Old Vic Theatre hosts the world premiere of Groundhog Day, starring Andy Karl as Phil Connors, the role made famous by Bill Murray in the 1993 film.
It is a story that is ripe for retelling on the stage and so that alone ensures plenty of enthusiasm for what promises to be one of the musical events of the year, but the show has another trick up its sleeve; it boasts the creative team of the West End’s hit show Matilda The Musical at the Cambridge Theatre, including composer Tim Minchin. So this is a must-see for a multitude of fans around the country.
Minchin is best known, of course, as a television comedian who has made appearances on various UK panel shows like Never Mind The Buzzcocks and has toured the UK with shows like So F**king Rock Live. Recent years have also seen him make the transition to American television in shows like Californication, whilst his stage work includes Australian productions of Hamlet and Twelfth Night.
But now he tackles Groundhog Day a classic story that focuses on the mentioned weatherman Phil Connors, who heads out to Punxutawney in Pennsylvania, where the annual ceremony takes place on Groundhog Day, which will determine the arrival of spring. The grumpy and deeply irritated Connors feels he is above the festivities and goes out of his way to spread his annoyance to those around him. But then the unexpected occurs – Connors finds himself reliving the same day again and again, every morning waking up to the same radio report and going through the same experiences. He may have to change his ways if he wishes to get out of this time loop.
And along the way we will hear Minchin’s musical numbers, whose success with Matilda The Musical has made him into one of the most sought-after names in the capital. With fellow-returning team members like Matthew Warchus (director) he has created a critically acclaimed audience favourite and they will be hoping for the same success with Groundhog Day.
Groundhog Day The Musical runs at the Old Vic Theatre from Tuesday 16th August 2016 (previews from Monday 11th July 2016).
