London theatre audiences get to witness the sights and sounds of Cuban culture with the return of Havana Rakatan at the Peacock Theatre in 2014. The acclaimed show, from the renowned dance company Ballet Rakatan and choreographer Nilda Guerra, provides a huge spectacle as a team of talented dancers show off their moves. Every year it earns plenty of attention – and plenty of audience members – thanks to the fast beats and the high energy on display. And Once again it comes to the West End’s stand-out home of dance – the Peacock Theatre – a venue that serves as a West End outlet for the work of the acclaimed dance venue at Sadlers Wells.
The Ballet Rakatan is one of the best known and most renowned dance companies of Cuba and ever since the group formed back in 2001 they have been on a steady rise, featuring some of the most talented dancers around and performing at some of the most prestigious venues in Cuba and around the world. In this country they have had a presence on stages far and wide, from the Edinburgh Festival to the Peacock Theatre and beyond, with additional performances in other cities across the continent.
And in 2007 they first brought Havana Rakatan to the Peacock Theatre and it is has returned regularly ever since, with audience demand ensuring that it has a lasting place in the West End year after year. But then it features an unbeatable spectacle as we meet some talented performers who provide dance beats and bright colour as the history of Cuba unfolds on the stage. From the roots of Spanish culture to the spiritual beliefs of Africa, various areas merged to create the Cuban culture we know today. Along the way dance styles emerge from the cha-cha-cha to the mambo and the result is something unforgettable.
The Peacock Theatre, being the West End home of dance in the capital, regularly welcomes to acclaimed and unique productions. From the regular appearances of Havana Rakatan to the Christmas tradition that is The Snowman during the winter months, it always has something to offer.
