Verdi’s opera “La Traviata” returns to the stage of London Coliseum with Peter Konwitschny directing the proceedings and the English National Opera leading the way. Just as audiences delved into the world inhabited by the iconic character Violetta back in the 1850s, modern audiences will be able to follow in their footsteps and witness something unforgettable. After all in addition to being regarded as one of the greatest operas of all time by some, it is also amongst the most regularly performed and this means that audiences across the last century and a half have seen this time and time again.

Verdi’s opera was based on the play entitled “La dame aux Camelias” and focuses on the character of Violetta – ‘La traviata’, or The Fallen Woman of the title – as her story of sacrificing oneself grips the audience right to its tragic ending. It was first penned in the early 1850s and premiered at Venice’s La Fenice Opera House in 1853 and since then, whilst revisions and updates have seen the text evolve, it has been performed on a regular basis to become part of the operatic repertoire. So audiences have continued to pick up opera tickets ever since.

This production will be wonderfully directed by Konwitschny, German director who has worked on some acclaimed productions, earning him numerous awards along the way.

“La Traviata”, which appears as part of the same season as shows such as “Carmen”, runs at the London Coliseum from Saturday 2nd February 2013, continuing into the next month.
