Matthew Bourne's Nutcracker

Every Christmas audiences head to London to witness “The Nutcracker” live onstage and in 2011 there will also be the option of “Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker”, a production presented by one of the most famous choreographers in the country – Matthew Bourne. For ballet fans this will be an unbeatable opportunity to witness the work of an acclaimed artist on the stage of Sadlers Wells – a London theatre famous for presenting contemporary dance. So when ballet tickets go on sale audiences will not want to miss out on “Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker” this December.

Bourne’s work is often seen in the capital and he is most famous for his version of “Swan Lake” in which he famously transforms the swans of the piece into men. It was a controversial decision but it certainly put him on the map and he has since presented the likes of “Matthew Bourne’s The Car Man”, “Matthew Bourne’s Edward Scissorhands”, “Matthew Bourne’s “Cinderella” and “Dorian Gray”. But he has not simply contributed to the world of ballet - he has also been involved in West End musicals such as “Oliver”. It makes him an acclaimed producer and choreographer – with Laurence Olivier Awards to his name - and one that is regularly in high demand.

“The Nutracker” is, of course, the classic ballet from Tchaikovsky that focuses on the character of Clara and her awe-inspiring Journey on Christmas Eve. One of her presents is a nutcracker doll from Mr Dosselmeyer and at first it seems normal, until she sneaks downstairs in the night and watches it come to life to join in a battle being waged between her Brother’s toy soldiers and some mice. Along with the nutcracker she then goes on an epic journey where she meets some memorable characters and witnesses the nutcracker transform into a handsome prince.

In “Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker” sees Clara begin her journey in an orphanage run by Dr Dross and on her journey she visits Sweetieland and a winter wonderland in what has been hailed as a triumphant interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s classic. It was first staged back in 2002.

“Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker” is at Sadler’s Wells from Tuesday 6th December 2011 to Sunday 22nd January 2011.
