The Merchants of Bollywood

When we think of the movie industry many will cast their minds to the sights and sounds of Hollywood, but on the other side of the planet sits the biggest film industry in the world – the legendary Bollywood – and it is this glittering world that comes to life onstage in The Merchants Of Bollywood. Returning to the Peacock Theatre after previous appearances here in recent years, the production continues its tradition of wowing audiences wherever it goes. It had already been seen on stages worldwide ahead of its Peacock debut in 2010 and with the famous Bollywood choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant leading the dance moves it is likely to be a popular draw once again in 2016.

The Merchants of Bollywood lays the history of this popular industry for all to see on the stage, with some of the biggest stars that have appeared onscreen celebrated as well. The result is an unforgettable dance spectacular featuring some talented and energised performers, plus some great dance moves choreographed by Merchant and some toe-tapping music from Salim and Sulaiman Merchant. As such it is unlikely that audiences armed with dance tickets are going to leave the Peacock Theatre with a forgetful memory any time soon.

Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant is known to many as the granddaughter of legendary choreographer Shri B. Hiralal but her claim to fame also extends to a long list of award-winning and popular Bollywood films. The film Lagaan, from 2001, contained a piece called O Ri Chhori that featured choreography from Vaibhavi and it would go on to earn a nomination for an Academy Award. And this is just one of the honours she has received over the years, with others including the IIFA Best Choreography Award. Meanwhile, some of her credits include Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Band Baaja Baaraat and Dil Bole Hadippa.

So The Merchants of Bollywood is likely to be a stand out production amongst the wealth of west end shows appearing in 2016 and this applies even in the context of the Peacock Theatre’s and Sadler’s Well’s anticipated season, which includes Into The Hoods: Remixed at the former and She Said at the latter, among others.

It runs at the Peacock Theatre from Tuesday 24th May 2016.
