Spend some time with Mr Popper and his penguins this Christmas as Richard and Florence Atwater’s classic story finds its way to a West End stage. After wowing crowds on the other side of the Atlantic it will now take pride of place at the Criterion Theatre – the ongoing home of The Comedy About A Bank Robbery – with a talented team bringing it to life.
The Atwater’s classic book, released in 1938, tells the story Mr Popper, a house painter who is bestowed with a penguin named Captain Cook after a box is delivered to his home. With the addition of a female penguin to the household it is not long before the home is inundated with the Antarctic birds.
A musical production, the show will feature this timeless story accompanied by some musical numbers that will undoubtedly put smiles on the faces of younger audiences.
Since the original novel emerged back in 1938 it has enjoyed a long life in the imaginations of readers, winning various awards over the decades and also leading to a film adaptation starring Jim Carrey in the title role, which was released in 2011. It is clearly a tale that audiences respond to and thanks to this stage production, which was also seen in Manhattan, it will find a new life in London’s West End.
With that in mind expect young theatregoers to flock to the Criterion Theatre this Christmas, a season that also sees shows like The Snowman and Dirty Dancing play in the capital, when Mr Popper’s Penguins plays from Friday 16th December 2016 (previews from Thursday 15th December 2016).
