The comic ballet Coppelia heads to the West End’s home of international dance, the Peacock Theatre, as the English National Ballet and the English National Ballet School present the show under the banner of My First Ballet. The original ballet, with music from Leo Delibes, has been a renowned piece since it was first seen by audiences in 1870 and it will undoubtedly remain a popular choice in 2014. Young audiences, new to ballet, will find something to love with the production and it is likely to spark an interest in the art form that could last a lifetime.
The comic tale introduces us to the character of Dr Coppélius and the new lifelike Coppélia doll he has created. The doctor wants nothing more than for the doll to come to life and through a case of mistaken identity and romantic mishap, he believes it might have happened.
The show is readapted for children and will undoubtedly offer something breathtaking for young audiences as choreographer George Williamson, who previously presented My First Cinderella in 2013 and is the English National Ballet’s Associate Artist, creates something magical for the stage.
In a year that also brings us the likes of Shadowland, the Peacock Theatre is the home of My First Ballet: Coppélia from Tuesday 8th April 2014.
