This July audiences can once again enjoy a stand-out ballet as part of the My First... range presented by the English National Ballet. This time around it is the return of Tchaikovsky’s enduring classic Sleeping Beauty, which will allow younger audiences with theatre tickets the opportunity to step into a world of fairy-tale as wonderful backdrops and memorable characters come to life on the stage of the Peacock Theatre.
Younger audiences might already be familiar with the story of Sleeping Beauty. After all, the Brothers Grimm fairy tale has been retold in many forms over the centuries, perhaps most notably in the form of the 1959 Disney film (and the recent live action film Maleficent). As such this provides a wonderful opportunity to bring them to the theatre to witness this classic adaptation.
Tchaikovsky’s ballet has been entertaining audiences since the 1890s and continues to be an enduring show. But then, it contains inspiring music and tells an unforgettable story of Princess Aurora cursed to die on her 16th birthday after pricking her finger, so this should come as no surprise. Whilst Aurora doesn’t die in the story, she does fall into a long sleep.
This is an unmissable treat and one that has already proven to be a popular production for younger crowds. The show previously played here at the Peacock Theatre earlier in 2016 and was also staged back in 2012. So it is a tried and test formula and one that will resonate with fans for years to come.
My First Ballet: Sleeping Beauty is at the Peacock Theatre from Wednesday 6th July 2016.
