Richard Jones directs Handel’s Rodelinda at the London Coliseum, meaning that those in the capital looking for a captivating opera will find it at the prestigious venue from February 2014. The Love Story, which was first performed in the United Kingdom back in the 18th century, has been seen worldwide and remains a stand-out piece of opera and its reappearance at the London Coliseum should ensure a large audience.
Rodelinda is the title character of the story and she is the grieving wife of King Bertarido, who has been forced to leave his kingdom by Grimoaldo, with many assuming him dead. But that’s not where it ends for Rodelinda as she now faces imprisonment if she does not marry Grimoaldo – only the return of the king can put the issue to rest and stop Grimoaldo from ruling the kingdom.
Rebecca Evans portrays Rodelinda in the production and she does so on the back of an impressive career that includes performances with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and at the Edinburgh Festival and Royal Opera House. She is more than capable of bringing something special to the iconic part and she is joined onstage by Iestyn Davies, John Mark Ainsley, Susan Bickley, Richard Burkhard and Christopher Ainslie, with Christian Curnyn conducting.
