A true masterpiece, Satyagraha makes its way to the London Coliseum under the banner of the English National Opera in November 2013 and gives those in the capital an opportunity to relish in a piece of work that has already captivated audiences in New York and during its London premiere in 2007.
Though the original opera Satyagraha by Philip Glass was first seen in the 1980 in the Netherlands, the version appearing at the ENO in 2013 is the one that premiered in 2007 and has since been staged on both sides of the Atlantic.
Focusing on the early years of Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa, Satyagraha explores his journey towards nonviolent protest, which he would later use to monumental effect at home in India. It mixes great performances with spectacle to create a mesmerising production for audiences with theatre tickets and it does so with the help of director Phelim McDermott, a seasoned director who has been behind a wealth of shows since the 1980s. It also features cast members like Alan Oke and Janis Kelly as Gandhi and Mrs Maidoo respectively.
In a year that also brings the likes of The Magic Flute and Die Fledermaus to the London Coliseum, Satyagraha runs at the venue from Wednesday 20th November 2013.
