Latest Review: "A brilliant production. Superb cast and music. ..."

The Menier Chocolate Factory welcomes The Color Purple, a musical adapted from the famous novel by Alice Walker, and in doing so it also attracts an array of talented performers and practitioners from actors like Cynthia Erivo and Nicola Hughes to director John Doyle.

The musical emerged in 2005 on Broadway and was one of many adaptations of the original 1982 novel (others include a 1980s movie). Its story is a celebrated one, set in rural Georgia, and thanks to the efforts of Brenda Russell, Stephen Bray and Allee Willis, who penned the music and lyrics, plus Marsha Norman, who wrote the book, it is now something that audiences can revisit on the stage.

The story takes audiences back to the 1930s where we focus on the lives of African American women during testing times. We meet the character of Celie, whose journey through life includes suffering and hope, whilst a score of jazz and Ragtime, featuring songs such as All We’ve Got To Say, Our Prayer and The Color Purple, ensures that this is something that audiences will not forget in a hurry.

Actress Celia Erivo has appeared in a wealth of shows over the years with recent credits like Lift at the Soho Theatre, Sister Act The Musical on a UK Tour and The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg at the Gielgud Theatre. Her career has also included various productions in other venues around the country and beyond. These include I Was Looking At The Ceiling And Then I Saw The Sky at the Theatre Royal Stratford East and Marine Parade in Brighton.

Meanwhile, Nicola Hughes has also appeared in a wealth of productions. These include west end shows like Chicago at the Adelphi Theatre and Goodbye Girl at the Albery Theatre. For Fosse at the Prince of Wales Theatre and Porgy And Bess at the Savoy Theatre she earned nominations for Laurence Olivier Awards, ensuring that she is someone to keep a close eye on when she appear on the stage in the capital.

In a year that also sees shows like Travels With My Aunt appear at the venue, The Color Purple runs at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Friday 5th July 2013.
