The Elephantom

Age Restriction: Suitable for ages 3+

Younger audiences across the capital will have another reason to head to the West End this summer as the New London theatre welcomes the National Theatre’s The Elephantom. The production is one of many shows to make the transition from the stage in South Bank to the West End and it does so by taking up the daytime slots at the New London Theatre, the home of War Horse.

It joins other children’s shows in the capital that have appeared in previous years, such as The Gruffalo and Room on the Broom. This year it also has the company of the Open Air Theatre’s Twelfth Night Re-imagined, so it is a great year to introduce younger minds to the wonders of live theatre.

The Elephantom is based on the picture book by Ross Collins, which follows the story of a little girl who, one day, makes a big discovery in her home when she realises that she is sharing her house with a ghost-elephant. At first it seems like it’s going to lead to lots of fun, but this can’t last forever, and it soon turns to trouble. After all, the house is far too small for the Elephantom and it won’t be long before things turn really messy.

The production is directed by Finn Caldwell and it appears at the New London Theatre following its previous appeared at the National Theatre venue The Shed. Before it was a stage show, however, it was also a picture book by Ross Collins, a Scottish author and illustrator who has also penned When I Woke Up I Was A Hippopotamus, Alvie Eats Soup and The Sea Hole, among others.

Finn Caldwell, meanwhile, has worked as a director, director of puppetry and a performer and these positions have seen him work on shows like The Light Princess at the National Theatre, War Horse at the New London Theatre and Shrek The Musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, among others.

With the ever popular War Horse continuing in evenings, The Elephantom (suitable for those above the age of 3) takes up daytime slots at the West End’s New London Theatre from Monday 30th June 2014.
