Latest Review: "Fab show - very lively with great singing and dancing! All the cast looked like they were enjoy..."

The hit Broadway musical The Pajama Game, based on Richard Bissell’s novel 7½ Cents, appears at the Shaftesbury Theatre following its successful appearance at the Chichester Festival Theatre. The show will see Joanna Riding continue in her role as Babe Williams, whom she played at the Chichester venue, whilst Michael Xavier is added to the cast. Both will work under the direction of the renowned Richard Eyre and with some stand-out songs to boast alongside a compelling story, this is likely to be a show that stays with audiences for some time to come.

The story of The Pajama Game takes us to a factory where the garments of the title are produced. Here the employees are demanding a 7½ cent pay rise and this is being refused by the bosses. But it’s not all union politics in the show; The Pajama Game also has a love story between Babe Williams, who represents the workers of the factory, and Sid Sorokin, the new superintendent, and the friction between the two factions could have implications for their romance.

Along the way, those with theatre tickets are treated to musical numbers like A New Town Is A Blue Town, I’m Not At All In Love, Hey There, Steam Heat, Think Of The Time I Save and Hernando’s Hideaway, among others.

The story, as penned by Richard Bissell, is a popular one that has stood the test of time ever since it was first published in 1953. Its Broadway stage adaptation emerged in 1954 and, in the years since, the original and its revivals have earned Tony Awards and acclaim. The show is also the subject of novel-turned musical Say, Darling which was also penned by Bissell later in the same decade. It demonstrates the longevity of the text, which continues to captivate audiences more than fifty years since it was introduced.

And this production boasts impressive cast members like Joanna Riding and Michael Xavier, the former well known for shows like My Fair Lady at the National Theatre in 2003 (winning a Laurence Olivier Award along the way) and the latter known for The Sound Of Music at the Open Air Theatre in 2013.

Following the musical From Here To Eternity, The Pajama Game runs at the Shaftesbury Theatre from Tuesday 13th May 2014 (previews from Thursday 1st May 2014).
