Audiences prepare to walk in the air this Christmas as the annual festive treat The Snowman returns once again and promises to continue what is a wonderful tradition at the Peacock Theatre. After all it just wouldn’t be the West End if the winter season did not see a return of everyone’s famous snowman and the wonderful score that goes along with it.
Its popularity is retained year after year and its television counterpart was joined by a sequel called The Snowman And The Snowdog in recent years, proving that this is a story that audiences cannot get enough of. So The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre is a tradition we can look forward to for years to come.
This story focuses on a remarkable adventure experienced by a young boy and his snowman companion on Christmas. It is a particularly cold and snowy day and so the boy does what any young boy would do in the situation and constructs a snowman, only to be shocked and delighted when the snowman magically comes to life at the stroke of midnight. It is a lot to take in, but a friendship is formed when the snowman exhibits his skills of flight, taking the boy on an adventure above the rooftops and the countryside, from which the iconic song Walking In The Air emerged when audiences first witnessed the movie version in the early 1980s. Along the way they meet some colourful characters from Santa Claus to Jack Frost.
The story is based upon the novel by Raymond Briggs, which arrived on book shelves in the late 1970s and provided the framework for what would become 1982’s animated movie, which is regularly shown at Christmas. Briggs would also pen other classic stories, from Father Christmas and Father Christmas Goes on Holiday (also adapted into animated film) to Ethel and Ernest.
But the story has not ended with the movie version and this ballet production would also make it to the stage in 1993 under the watch of Howard Blake and Robert North and this production has been doing the rounds ever since, with audiences regularly eager to pick up theatre tickets and witness the action first hand.
The Snowman makes its Christmas 2016 appearance when it begins at the Peacock Theatre this November.
