The Dominion Theatre in London’s West End becomes the battleground for an epic tale of war as H. G. Wells The War Of The Worlds comes to the stage.
Taking the original story of man’s battle against Martians, this musical version of events is the next step in the journey embarked upon by Jeff Wayne, whose 1978 album added a new twist to the iconic tale. As such it will be an unmissable treat for countless generations of fans, whether they grew up with the 1898 novel or Wayne’s 1970s album.
The War Of The World’s is set in Victorian England and it is here that mankind must struggle to survive against the advances of a technologically superior species, which has had its eye on Earth for some time.
Though numerous stories have emerged over the last century that deal with the human race being attacked by aliens, H. G. Wells’ classic laid the foundations and has inspired audiences and artists ever since, with two Hollywood movies based on the novel emerging, as well as radio plays and more.
Wayne’s contribution was the mentioned concept album of 1978 and this was followed up by an updated version in 2012 under the title The New Generation. As well as entertaining fans with these releases he also took the concept on tour and arenas across the country were treated to live performances of the songs.
This live musical version is the natural progression from those arena shows as an array of talented performers brings the characters to life at the Dominion Theatre. There will also be a familiar face from the arena tour – the holographic Liam Neeson as the narrator.
Wayne has penned the music for the production, with lyrics provided by Paul Vigrass and Gary Osbourne and direction from Bob Tomson. Wayne also pens the script along with Dorren Wayne.
As such the War Of The Worlds becomes the latest in a long line of well known adaptations to head to the West End. Some of the capital’s best known musicals have found fans on the big screen, from Billy Elliot The Musical to The Lion King. The Dominion Theatre is home to another – Elf The Musical – prior to the arrival of the Jeff Wayne hit. It shows that audiences have an appetite for these timeless stories and their generation-defying longevity.
The War Of The Worlds runs at the Dominion Theatre from Wednesday 17th February 2016 (previews from Monday 8th February 2016).
