Surely the best news of the year is the announcement that a new musical version of The Wind In The Willows will be taking to the stage in the West End in the summer of 2017! Audiences cannot get enough of this wonderful show on tour and now it is it turn of Theatreland crowds to get a look in as the production gears up for a run at the London Palladium, with Mr Toad and Mole all along for the ride!
In fact Mr Toad will look a lot like Rufus Hound when the show arrives in London. The well known comedian and actor will be portraying the part in the West End following his duties in the touring version, bringing new life to an iconic character.
But Mr Toad and Mole aren’t the only characters brought to life in the West End in 2017, with characters like Mr Badger, Ratty and Chief Weasel amongst the familiar names. Together they are part of a story that has enchanted audiences since Kenneth Grahame’s novel was first published over a century ago in 1908. It takes audiences to the riverside as the characters experience problems as man encroaches on their habitat.
But along the way audiences will delight in the musical numbers penned by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, which will undoubtedly put smiles on faces.
Where do you even start in delving into the background of a story like The Wind In The Willows? Since its publication it has grown and grown as an intrinsic part of popular culture, spawning countless stage adaptations and screen versions over the last century, with animated and live action versions appearing in abundance.
As a result it has been a big part of people’s childhoods, including star Rufus Hound who comes to the West End on the back of numerous previous appearances here in recent years. London theatregoers might remember him in One Man, Two Guvnors at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at the Savoy Theatre, amongst others. They might also recognise him from his numerous television appearances, from Never Mind The Buzzcocks to Doctor Who.
So this is gearing up to be the must-see event of the year! The Wind In The Willows runs at the London Palladium from June 2017.
