One of the West End’s top musicals, Top Hat, lands at the New Wimbledon Theatre in August. As a result, it gives audiences another chance to relive the exploits of Jerry Travers and Dale Tremont in a story of romance and mistaken identity performed to some unforgettable musical numbers.
The production previously appeared at the Aldwych Theatre in London’s West End and managed to land many awards during its time there. So this UK tour, which begins at the New Wimbledon Theatre and then moves on to other locations around the country, can’t come soon enough!
In Top Hat we follow the character of Jerry Travers, an American dancer, as he arrived in London to appear in the latest show produced by the renowned Horace Hardwick. But when he arrives things do not go according to plan as he meets the beautiful Dale Tremont and attempts to win her heart. But she thinks that Travers is the married Hardwick and is horrified by his advances in this screwball comedy.
It is based on the 1935 movie of the same name that featured songs by Irving Berlin. The stage musical followed some time later, in 2011, and despite the advances of time the story remained one that theatregoers could get behind. It picked up Laurence Olivier Awards and audience approval, with songs like Let’s Face The Music And Dance and Cheek To Cheek putting a smile on everyone that saw it at the Aldwych Theatre.
Top Hat runs at the New Wimbledon Theatre from Tuesday 12th August 2014.
