Important Info: Renowned comedian Phill Jupitus (Never Mind The Buzzcocks, QI, Hairspray, Monty Python’s Spamalot) will join the cast of Jamie Lloyd’s ground breaking, splash hit production of Urinetown The Musical from 1 December 2014.
The Apollo Theatre welcomes the musical Urinetown to the stage following its successful appearance at the St James Theatre. It features a stand-out cast of talented performers, working under the direction of Jamie Lloyd, who recently made headlines for his acclaimed Trafalgar Transformed season at Trafalgar Studios.
Urinetown is a musical that is set in a world where toilets are monopolised. The man making the money from this situation is Caldwell B Cladwell and he has made a fortune from the venture. But that’s not the only part of the story troubling People of the future; those that are caught illegally relieving themselves in public are sent to the eponymous location. The play is celebrated as a satire of the legal system, among other areas of society, and also offers parodies of other top musicals. As a result it became a favourite of audiences when it landed in the United States over a decade ago.
The show was first seen by audiences in New York back in 2001 and has since appeared on other stages across the United States. Its production at the St James Theatre marked its UK debut and was the first time that audiences on this side of the Atlantic could pick up theatre tickets and see a show that earned numerous Tony Awards (Best Book of a Musical, Best Musical Score and Best Direction of a Musical) and nominations during its time in the US.
Jamie Lloyd, in addition to shows like Richard III and last year’s The Hothouse, which appeared as part of Trafalgar Transformed, has made a name for himself with highly acclaimed shows in the capital. These have included a wealth of shows at the Donmar Warehouse, where he was Associate Director until 2011, plus the likes of The Duchess Of Malfi at the Old Vic Theatre, She Stoops to Conquer at the Olivier National Theatre and Three Days Of Rain at the Apollo Theatre (which received an Olivier Award nomination).
Urinetown The Musical takes pride of place the Apollo Theatre following the high profile appearance of Let The Right On In, which itself followed The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.
