18-22 Greenside Place
The Edinburgh Playhouse is situated on Greenside Place, at the top of Leith Walk and close to the east end of Princes Street. This is less than 10 minute's walk from Waverley Station, 5 minutes walk from the bus station and on various major bus routes.
The Edinburgh Playhouse welcomes the high profile musical West Side Story in March 2014 as part of a UK tour that introduces an array of new audiences to the Upper West Side of New York in the 1950s. Based on the original show by Arthur Laurents, Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, it appears in a year that will also have performances from hits like The Lion King, ensuring that the Scottish capital remains a great place to witness high profile West End and Broadway musicals.
Inspired by the event depicted in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, West Side Story sees star-crossed lovers meet one another at opposing sides of street gangs in the 1950s of Upper West Side New York. One of them is Tony, a member of the Polish-American working-class Jets, whilst the other is Maria, the sister to the leader of the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang.
With Joey McKneely directing and fantastic musical numbers such as Maria, A Boy Like That, I Feel Pretty and Somewhere, among others, West Side Story will not be a show that audiences will want to miss.
West Side Story makes its brief appearance at the Edinburgh Playhouse from Tuesday 18th March 2014.
