The Wyndham’s Theatre continues to attract some stand out shows as 2013 sees it become the home of “Barking In Essex”, the new play from writer Clive Exton and director Harry Burton. The show will undoubtedly attract a sizable crowd not only due to its distinction of being the new play from an established screenwriter but also as it stars performers like Lee Evans and Sheila Hancock, both of whom are established names that have been successful both on the stage and the screen.

It is a busy time for the Wyndham’s Theatre, following productions like “Quartermaine’s Terms” and “Relatively Speaking” at the venue in 2013, and “Barking in Essex” will ensure that audiences continue to flock here as the year continues.

The plot focuses on the trials faced by the Packers – Darnley and Emmie (Evans and Hancock) - on the day that Algie Packer – a notorious gangster - is released from prison. Algie is one of the most prolific gangsters in Essex and he has spent seven years behind bars, so he hopes he will be able to head home and find the £3.5 million he has stashed there. But his dysfunctional family is not going to make this easy for him as they frantically strive to cover their tracks before his arrival.

Lee Evans is best known to audiences for his stand-up comedy work, which has seen him sell out arenas around the country during a long and successful career. However, he has also branched out into acting and this has seen him appear in various movies, television shows and stage productions. He has appeared in “The Dumb Waiter” at the Trafalgar Studios and “The Producers” at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, whilst screen roles include “There’s Something About Mary”, “Mousetrap”, “The Fifth Element” and comedy shows like “The World of Lee Evans” and “So What Now?”

Meanwhile, Sheila Hancock is an acting legend who has appeared in various stage productions like “Sister Act the Musical” at the London Palladium and “Cabaret” at the Lyric Theatre. Audiences with theatre tickets may also remember her as a judge on the BBC talent show “Over the Rainbow”.

“Barking in Essex” is set to appear at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Monday 16th September 2013 (previews from Friday 6th September 2013).
