The Olivier National Theatre welcomes this stage adaptation of Katherine Boo’s novel Behind The Beautiful Forevers by David Hare. It features Meera Syal, best known for her work in the likes of Goodness Gracious Me, working under the direction of Rufus Norris as stories unfold in the slums of Mumbai
In addition to Syal, the cast also includes Hiran Abeysekera, Esh Alladi, Nathalie Armin, Pal Aron, Gavi Singh Chera, Tia-Lana Chinapyel, Vincent Ebrahim, Sartaj Garewal, Mariam Haque, Thusitha Jayasundera, Muzz Khan, Ranjit Krishnamma, Manjeet Mann, Nikita Mehta, Anjli Mohindra, Tia Palamathanan, Bharti Patel, Ronak Patani, Anneika Rose, Chook Sibtain, Stephanie Street, Anjana Vasan, Assad Zaman and Shane Zaza.
Behind The Beautiful Forevers takes us to the slums, far away from the successes of India’s richer areas, and it is here that we witness the personal stories of those struggling to live there. We see people trying to find success in these unforgiving circumstances, from a character hoping to be the first to graduate to others hoping to fund a house by recycling rubbish.
Meera Syal, in addition to the mentioned Goodness Gracious Me (seen on television in the late 1990s), has also made a name for herself with starring roles and appearances in likes of The Kumars At No.42, Family Tree and Doctor Who. However, those with theatre tickets might also recognise her stage work in the likes of Peer Gynt and Rafta, Rafta... at the National Theatre and Shirley Valentine at the Menier Chocolate Factory, among others.
Behind The Beautiful Forevers is at the Olivier National Theatre from 18th November 2014 (previews from 10th November 2014). It runs during the Christmas season alongside Treasure Island.
