Simon Gray’s classic tale of self-destruction returns to the West End in 2011, with Dominic West, Paul McGann and Penny Downie appearing as Ben Butley, Reg Nuttall and Edna Shaft in “Butley”. Alongside other shows such as “Pygmalion” at the Garrick Theatre it is yet another example of a London theatre production opening this year that features a cast well known from the screen. This time the actors are plucked from British and American movies and television shows, from “The Wire” to “Doctor Who”. It is set to open its doors in June for a run that takes it to August 2011.
Ben Butley is a university lecturer and T.S. Eliot scholar who is having an enormously bad day. Not only is today the day that his wife leaves him, it is also the day that his male lover – his protégé – has found a brand new benefactor. There’s also an ungifted member of the department that has landed a book deal, so suffice to say it seems as though his life is falling apart at the seams. So over the course of a few hours Butley sows the seeds of his own destruction as he indulges in bullying and name-calling, all the while continuing to fall apart.
Dominic West makes his West End return in the production, having previously appeared in a host of shows around town in the last two decades. “Rock ‘n’ Roll” was one of his more recent productions, landing at the Duke of York’s Theatre in 2006, and it followed up appearances in the likes of “The Seagull” at The Old Vic a decade earlier. But to most of those with theatre tickets he will be most recognisable as Jimmy McNulty in the US television show “The Wire”, with further screen credits like “300”, “Centurion” and shows like “The Devil’s Whore”.
The play “Butley” was first seen by audiences in the West End in 1971 when it premiered at the Criterion Theatre – currently the home of the popular the 39 Steps – and has since been seen on Broadway and onscreen in a 1974 movie. Many well known names have steped into the role occupied by the new cast, from Alan Bates and Michael Byrne to Nathan Lane and Susan Engel.
Butley is due to begin its anticipated run on Monday 6th June 2011 (with previews from Wednesday 1st June 2011). It then continues to Saturday 27th August 2011.
