The Menier Chocolate Factory has another sure-fire hit on its hands this October as it welcomes a stand—out cast for a new production of “Charley’s Aunt”. Like previous shows that have appeared in this off-West End venue near London Bridge, it is a show to keep an eye on, not only because many of the hit productions to appear here tend to make their way to the West End, but also because the shows that don’t have a lot to offer as well.
Matthew Horne is one of the cast members of the production and the television comedy star will be joined by another veteran of that world in Norman Pace. Both are known for their double-acts and both will bring new life to Brandon Thomas’s classic piece.
In “Charley’s Aunt” the focus is on Charley and his absent Brazilian aunty, who is supposed to appear in town so that she can chaperone him and his friend Jack on their mission to ask their respective girlfriends for their hands in marriage. But with Aunt Donna Lucia out of the picture they force Lord Fancourt Babberley to pose as her and when the missing aunt finally arrives on the scene chaos ensues.
The play is a well known piece that has been doing the round since the 1890s when it premiered in Bury St Edmonds and since then it has appeared on many other stages, with revivals on numerous occasions and international production opening at locations like Broadway. So when it opens at the Menier Chocolate Factory there is no doubting that many will be flocking to pick up theatre tickets and relish in what is a much-admired piece of theatre. And seeing as they have both Matthew Horne and Norman Pace as part of the cast, the producers are on to a sure-fire hit!
“Charley’s Aunt” is at the Menier Chocolate Factory from Monday 1st October 2012 (previews from Thursday 20th September 2012) to Saturday 10th November 2012.
