Latest Review: "After seeing Marc Warren in "Hustle", I was not sure he could handle the lead part as I still had..."

Those headed to the Aldwych Theatre in 2011 will be able to witness a brand new production starring “Hustle” actor Marc Warren. It takes the form of “Cool Hand Luke” – best known as the 1967 movie starring Paul Newman, which was adapted from the novel of the same name – and it replaces the Aldwych’s long-running and popular show “Dirty Dancing”, which is set to close its doors in July 2011.

“Cool Hand Luke” will be quite the change of pace for the venue, which has been the home of the musical since 2006 and prior to that had provided the stage for “Fame the Musical” as well.

Those that have witnessed the 1960s movie will recognise the tale of the cool and rebellious Florida prisoner. Luke Jackson is a veteran of the Second World War and has turned his back on the system after it betrayed him. So as he refuses to abide by the laws of the land – and of the prison – he regularly escapes and as time goes on the prison bosses try their best to break him down fully – but Luke is a man who is not easily broken. The original novel was penned by Donn Pearce and in addition to Paul Newman it starred George Kennedy and Strother Martin, among others.

But at the Aldwych Theatre the role of Luke Jackson falls in the hands of Marc Warren, who has made a name for himself as the character of Danny Blue in the popular television series “Hustle”. During his career he has also appeared in a wealth of other shows for our television screens, from “State of Play” to “Band of Brothers” and “The Vice”, whilst also finding time to appear in movies like “Wanted”. For the stage, he has appeared in “The Pillowman” at the Curve Theatre, Leicester, and “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” at London’s Vaudeville Theatre.

The production also features a director in Andrew Loudon, an actor and director with various shows to his name. As a director he has been behind “Carrie’s War” at the Apollo Theatre, “Open Ground” at the Hampstead Theatre and “Little Women” at Sadler’s Wells. As an actor he has appeared in the likes of “Dangerous Play” at the Arts Theatre and the television series “Monarch of the Glen”.

“Cool Hand Luke” appears at the West End theatre from Monday 3rd October 2011 (previews from Friday 23 September 2011) to Saturday 7th January 2012.
