We have experienced many ‘what if’ plays in the capital over the years, as well as various imagined scenarios involving well known political leaders (like The Audience or The Three Lions), but the latest show to head to the Menier Chocolate Factory will offer a ‘what if’ scenario of the highest order.
Boasting an impressive cast in Steven Berkoff, Sanjeev Bhaskar and Nathan Amzi, plus a director in the highly acclaimed Lindsay Posner, Dinner With Saddam does exactly what it says on the tin and offers us an imaginative and entertaining look at an imagined meeting with the former dictator of Iraq. It comes from the pen of Anthony Horowitz and also stars Rebecca Grant, Shobu Kopoor and Ilan Goodman.
What if Saddam Hussein appeared on your doorstep for dinner? It would be important to choose the right topic of discussion, but what about the choice of menu?
The comedy is a must-see at the Menier Chocolate Factory this autumn, particularly as the script comes from the mentioned Horowitz, whose previous work has included numerous novels and television series, from Foyle’s War to the upcoming James Bond novel Trigger Mortis.
But perhaps the highest profile coup of this production is the casting of Steven Berkoff as Saddam Hussein and Sanjeev Bhaskar in another lead role.
A well known comic performer, Bhaskar has appeared in a wealth of beloved television shows like Goodness Gracious Me and The Kumars At No.42, both of which he also wrote. Beyond those shows he has also appeared in the likes of Doctor Who and Top Gear, with theatre roles that have included Spamalot at the Palace Theatre in London’s West End, Art at the Whitehall Theatre (now the Trafalgar Studios, also in the West End), Totally Looped on tour and a previous tour of his show Goodness Gracious Me.
The Menier Chocolate Factory regularly welcomes some of the highest profile shows outside of the West End. Over the years these productions have attracted some of the biggest names and some of them have been granted a West End transfer, meaning that the venue it a good place to look for future West End hits.
Dinner With Saddam lands on its stage this autumn when it runs from Tuesday 22nd September 2015 (previews from Thursday 10th September 2015).
