The St James Theatre welcomes the National Theatre of Kiev for a brief season of shows this September, providing compelling performances from writers like Anton Chekhov and beyond.

As part of this season, the theatre presents Don Juan, offering a Ukrainian interpretation of the literary libertine. Presented in Russian with an English live-dub, it will be a unique opportunity to see an authentic piece of Ukrainian theatre presented onstage, with the choice of language open to the viewer.

The original story takes us back to the 14th century and was penned by Tirso de Molina, but this is not the initial Spanish version that originally entertained audiences in the 1630s and is instead the Ukrainian interpretation of the Don Juan legend, which departs from some of the familiar versions audiences know and love.

After all, the Don Juan legend has lived on through the centuries, with de Molina’s original followed up by the likes of Moliere and Mozart (the latter used it as the basis for his opera Don Giovanni). It is an influential piece about the struggle between desired freedoms and the consequence of authority.

The National Theatre of Kiev season also presents three other shows in September, with Don Juan joined by two shows that have a basis in the work of Anton Chekhov – Life’s Little Nothings, based on his short stories, and My Mocking Happiness, based on his correspondence. The season also includes Ward of the Manor, based on Ivan Turgenev’s Fortune’s Fool (staged by Kiev’s National Academic Theatre of Russian Drama).

Don Juan runs at the St James Theatre from Thursday 17th September 2015.
