Latest Review: "The cast were all absolutely brilliant, we travelled up to London on Saturday and can describe it..."

The hit play East Is East, based on the 1999 movie of the same name, is returning to the West End in 2014 and it boasts an impressive cast and director alongside it. Jane Horrocks is set to take on the role of Ella, the wife of patriarch George Khan (Khan Din), and Sam Yates leads as director, making him the first to direct a show as part of the Trafalgar Transformed season beyond Jamie Lloyd.

The Trafalgar Transformed season has, of course, welcomed an array of big names to the Trafalgar Studios in 2013 and 2014, from Richard III with Martin Freeman. East Is East continues this tradition of stand-out theatre with high quality talent.

East Is East takes audiences with theatre tickets to 1970s Salford we meet a Pakistani family with the patriarch, George ‘Genghis’ Khan at odds with his children in regards to the style of their upbringing. George would prefer they have a Pakistani Muslim upbringing whilst the children identify as British and would prefer to adhere more to western customs.

The story itself was successful enough on the big screen to spawn a sequel, which landed on cinema screens in 2010 as West Is West.

Jane Horrocks is a celebrated actress whose career has included iconic stage productions and well known television characters, in addition to movie roles. In regards to theatrical work she is best known for starring in the original production of The Rise And Fall Of Little Voice in the 1990s, which earned her a Laurence Olivier Awards and spawned a movie version called Little Voice, also starring Horrocks. She has since worked on other movies like Chicken Run and remains well known for portraying Bubbles in Absolutely Fabulous. Her recent stage credits include Annie Get Your Gun at The Young Vic Theatre in 2009 and Absurd Person Singular at the Garrick Theatre in 2007.

The new Trafalgar Transformed season begins with Richard III in early July, following on from Jeremy Herrin’s production of Another Country.

East Is East then runs, as part of the season, at Trafalgar Studios 1 from Wednesday 15th October 2014 (previews from Saturday 4th October 2014).
