Audiences headed to the Menier Chocolate Factory regularly prepare themselves for a gripping and memorable piece of theatre and its high quality of output is reflected in its numerous West End transfers. This April it is the turn of Willy Russell’s “Educating Rita” to appear at the venue as part of its national tour of the United Kingdom and it does so with two stars of the stage and screen in tow – Claire Sweeney and Matthew Kelly.
In “Educating Rita”, London theatre audiences will witness the story of Rita, the well known overbearing Liverpudlian hairdresser, as she enrols on a course with the Open University. As a result she needs a tutor and this is supplied to her in the form of Frank, whose opinion of the world is challenged by her unique views. Throughout the play we witness their interactions as their friendship develops and changes over time.
Matthew Kelly is a well known performer whose recent stage work has earned him considerable acclaim. He is best known as the presenter of television shows like “Stars in their Eyes” and “You Bet!” though he has since appeared in “Waiting For Godot” at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and “Of Mice and Men” at the Savoy Theatre, the latter earning him a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actor in 2004.
“Educating Rita” appears at the Menier Chocolate Factory in London from Wednesday 25th April 2012 to Saturday 12th May 2012.
