Farinelli and The King
Mark Rylance returns to the West End in this anticipated transfer from the Sam Wanamaker Theatre at Shakespeare’s Globe.
Farinelli And The King is the new play from Claire van Kampen and it takes those with theatre tickets back to the 18th century, with Rylance portraying King Philippe V of Spain. It is not only an opportunity to witness one of the most respected names of the stage in the West End, but a chance to step back in time to explore the world of one of the most famous Castratos of the time.
The show has already found great success at its previous home and its West End run will increase the size of its audience tenfold.
Mark Rylance, in addition to starring in numerous high profile plays over the years, is also well known for his previous role as Artistic Director of the Globe Theatre and as a result has appeared in numerous shows with them. In recent years he has found a place in the spotlight thanks to highly acclaimed productions, ranging from the megahit Jerusalem at the Apollo Theatre (and Broadway) from writer Jez Butterworth to the recent revival of Richard III at the same venue. His latest ventures to the stage are always deservedly held with great anticipation.
And with Farinelli And The King he steps into the title role of King Philippe V of Spain as audiences are introduced not only to the famous monarch, but the well known Castrato Farinelli as well. The latter was one of the most highly regarded of the time but he gave up a life of fame to serve the king and this show explores his reasons for this major life decision.
It is a compelling tale that is in safe hands with Claire van Kampen, whose career as a director, playwright and composer and ensured a lasting legacy. She has worked on high profile shows such as Twelfth Night and Boeing Boeing in the West End and with Farinelli And The King has landed a significant West End success story.
Farinelli And The King runs at the West End’s Duke of York’s Theatre from Tuesday 29th September 2015 (previews from Monday 14th September 2015).
