Lucy Punch plays Paige Britain in Richard Bean’s new satirical play at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Great Britain, directed by the acclaimed Nicholas Hytner, delves into the world of tabloid journalism and the wider issues affecting the United Kingdom in a production announced during the furore of the phone-hacking trial verdicts. It has already earned great praise at the Lyttelton National Theatre and so this West End transfer can’t come soon enough.
Paige Britain is the editor of the British tabloid The Free Press, a paper that will do anything at its disposal to attract a larger number of readers. But, just as it is in the real world, this leads it to the centre of many contentious issues, and as a result, audiences with theatre tickets witness the police, press and politics collide onstage.
Lucy Punch replaces Billie Piper in the main role. The latter appeared in the production at the Lyttelton National Theatre and now Punch, appearing at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, adds another theatre credit to a list that includes A Carpet, A Pony And A Monkey at the Bush Theatre, Boy Gets Girl at the Royal Court Theatre and The Graduate at the Gielgud Theatre. The actress has also been a member of the National Youth Theatre and appeared onscreen in the likes of Bad Teacher, Ella Enchanted, You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger, Dinner For Schmucks and Hot Fuzz, alongside television work like The Class, Doc Martin, Vexed and Ben And Kate.
Meanwhile, Richard Bean is no stranger to putting together high profile productions at the National Theatre. He penned the recent One Man, Two Guvnors, which appeared at the National and in the West End, whilst previous credits include The Heretic at the Royal Court Theatre, The Big Fellah at the Lyric Hammersmith and England People Very Nice at the National Theatre. He is also responsible for this year’s high profile musical Made in Dagenham at the Adelphi Theatre.
Following its appearance at the National Theatre on South Bank, Great Britain now takes to the stage of the Theatre Royal Haymarket, replacing the star-studded Daytona. The latter stars Harry Shearer and Maureen Lipman in lead roles and runs from June to August.
Meanwhile, Great Britain runs at the West End venue from Wednesday 10th September 2014.
