The Hampstead Theatre in North London welcomes the Tom Stoppard play Hapgood from December 2015. The 1988 story has many fans in the capital – as any Tom Stoppard production does – and the latest staging will only add to this as the acclaimed Howard Davies steps up to direct.
It will be a chance to revisit a classic text with acclaimed talent working behind the scenes. After all, Stoppard has been behind a wealth of well known shows over the years, with The Hard Problem his most recent work, which was staged at the Dorfman National Theatre this year. His career has also seen him pen the beloved pieces Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, Every Good Boy Deserves Favour, The Real Thing and Arcadia, amongst others.
But with Hapgood he tackles the end of the Cold War as we are transported back to 1988 and introduced to the spymaster character of Elizabeth Hapgood, who is aware of secrets being leaked from her network of spies. Who is behind it? As she attempts to find out it is clear that there will be plenty of twists, turns and betrayals.
The original production was staged at the Aldwych Theatre back in 1988 and featured some big names in the roles (including Felicity Kendal in the title role back then). This time around it has Howard Davies, who has worked with the venue before, and he is best known for his Olivier Award winning directing jobs on the likes of The Iceman Cometh and All My Sons.
So now he tackles another stand-out text in Hapgood, which runs at the Hampstead Theatre in North London from Friday 4th December 2015.
