“Hedda Gabler” returns to the stage in London in what promises to be a stand-out revival of Henrik Ibsen’s classic play at the Old Vic. Not only is it one of the most prominent pieces from the Norwegian playwright, who penned it in the late 19th century, it is also a more recent edition of the text as it is the adaptation from Brian Friel. The majesty of the work means that it has been able to attract a cast that includes Buffy Davis and Sheridan Smith alongside Darrell D’Silva, Daniel Lapaine, Anne Reid, Adrian Scarborough and Fenella Woolgar.
Sheridan Smith is a name that particularly stands out from the list and this is because of her enormous success in the West End in recent years. This culminated with her Laurence Olivier Award-win for “Legally Blonde the Musical” at the Savoy Theatre, which she followed up a year later with another win for her supporting role in “Flare Path” at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Meanwhile, her additional credits include “Little Shop of Horrors” at the Menier Chocolate Factory and the role of Donna in the television series “Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps”.
But whilst “Hedda Gabler” will certainly benefit from this stand-out cast it is always going to attract an audience thanks to the reputation of the text, which is now recognised as a classic (even though it was released to negative reviews). Focusing on the eponymous Gabler, the play has admirers worldwide and, as such, it has come a long way since audiences sat down to witness the premiere in Germany back in 1891.
“Hedda Gabler” is at the Old Vic Theatre from Wednesday 12th September 2012 (previews from Wednesday 5th September 2012) to Saturday 10th November 2012. It is followed by “Kiss Me Kate”, which plays over the Christmas period.
