From November 2013 the St James Theatre in London welcomes In The Next Room or the vibrator play following a successful run at the Theatre Royal Bath. The show will feature Edward Bennett and Flora Montgomery in lead roles and is certain to drum up considerable attention at the West End’s newest venue.
It is set in the State of New York in the later days of the 1800s and focuses on an invention that could rival other electrical items of the time. But whilst Dr Givings is hoping to treat female hysteria he instead lands on something that could revolutionise the world of sexual aids.
The true story has already been seen on the other side of the Atlantic when its Broadway premiere took place in 2009, leading to three nominations at the subsequent Tony Awards. Now it heads to the West End where producers will be hoping for repeat success.
Laurence Boswell directs from Sarah Ruhl’s script and this means that Boswell is following up productions that have seen him work with some big names, from Matt Damon to Ben Elton, on the likes of Popcorn (Elton) and This Is Our Youth (Damon). The latter appeared at the Garrick Theatre and also featured various other Hollywood actors. He became the Associate Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2003.
Audiences can pick up theatre tickets to see In The Next Room or the vibrator play at the St James Theatre from 13th November 2013 to 4th January 2014.
