One of four shows appearing at the St James Theatre that celebrates Ukrainian culture this September, My Mocking Happiness is staged by the National Theatre of Kiev and offers London theatre audiences the opportunity to witness authentic Ukrainian theatre.

My Mocking Happiness will be staged in Russian, with a live English dub giving audiences the option when it comes to languages.

The show utilises the personal correspondence of the legendary Russian writer Anton Chekhov to provide an insight into his mind. The letters are between him and his wife Olga and provide audiences with his thoughts on life and his work, making it an unmissable production for fans of the playwright behind shows like Uncle Vanya.

Chekhov’s work continues to be celebrated around the world, with theatres regularly staging the likes of The Cherry Orchard, Three Sisters and The Seagull. Such productions are often seen in London and his popularity will ensure his legacy remains intact well into the future.

Such is his popularity, My Mocking Happiness has been regularly performed in Ukraine for half a century, with David Borovsky initially choreographing, and audiences have continued to absorb these insightful thoughts from the playwright himself.

Chekhov’s work is also explored in another of this season’s shows – Life’s Little Nothings, which is derived from his short stories – whilst the plays Ward of the Manor (based on Ivan Turgenev’s Fortune’s Fool) and Don Juan (a Ukrainian version of the Spanish legend).

My Mocking Happiness is at the St James Theatre from Friday 11th September 2015.
