Kevin Elyot’s celebrated 1994 play My Night With Reg returned to the capital in 2014 with a run at the Donmar Warehouse in Covent Garden. Now that production is set to make its way to the West End in 2015, complete with its cast and director, as it captivates audiences at the Apollo Theatre.

Audiences will recognise Julian Ovenden in the lead role, as he exchanges Downton Abbey for the London of the 1980s, and he appears alongside Matt Bardock, Jonathan Broadbent, Richard Cant, Lewis Reeves and Geoffrey Streatfeild with rising star Robert Hastie in the director’s chair.

The piece was penned back in the early 1990s and Kevin Elyot, who died earlier this year, earned various awards for it, including the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy in 1995 following its premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in 1994. Those with theatre tickets are transported back to 1985 and are given an insight into London’s gay community of the time. We witness events take place in the flat of the character named Guy, with gatherings held there at a time in which the AIDS crisis is taking hold and causing big changes for this group of friends.

Performer Julian Ovenden plays one of these friends – John – and does so as an actor with various stage and screen credits to his name. He has appeared in theatrical productions on both side of the Atlantic, from Merrily We Roll Along at the Donmar Warehouse in 2000 to Butley at the Booth Theatre in New York in 2006. His other credits include Annie Get Your Gun at the Young Vic Theatre in 2009 and Marguerite at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, in addition to television shows like Downton Abbey, Person Of Interest, Smash, Any Human Heart, Foyle’s War and The Royal, among others.

This is also true of co-star Matt Bardock, who has appeared in Mike Leigh films like All Or Nothing and Topsy-Turvy, plus theatrical productions such as The Dark at the Donmar Warehouse.

My Night With Reg replaces Urinetown The Mucsical when it opens at the Apollo Theatre on Friday 23rd January 2015 (with previews beginning on Saturday 17th January 2015).
