Important Info: The performance of Private Peaceful on 23rd September is considered as an open Dress Rehearsel.
The work of Michael Morpurgo always manages to find an audience, with War Horse continuing to entertain those at the New London Theatre, but another of his books has also made it to the stage since its publication and that returns, thanks to the National Youth Theatre, in 2014. The show appears in repertoire with two other productions from the company – Selfie and Macbeth – and it will offer audiences another chance to step back to the First World War and witness the conditions faced by those in the trenches.
Private Tommo Peaceful is the man we follow in the play and he is the man who finds himself in the horrific conditions on the front line. It is from this shocking location that he thinks back on his life, reflecting on his school days in Devon and his father’s death. Eventually we also see the events that led to his current situation in the war and it gives us a new angle on those in charge of the conflict and the views of those who put their lives on the line.
Michael Morpurgo is a writer whose work has been acclaimed throughout his career, whether it is the show that have been adapted to the stage like War Horse and Private Peaceful or at least the multitude of other novels he has penned. His other works, many of them award-winning or nominated, include The Last Wolf, The Wreck Of The Zanzibar and The Butterfly Lion, whilst he held the title of Children’s Laureate from 2003 to 2005.
