Important Info: The performance of Selfie on the 17th September 2014 is considered an open Dress Rehearsal.
The National Youth Theatre heads to the West End’s Ambassadors Theatre in 2014 for a season of shows that includes this reinterpretation of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture Of Dorian Gray. Peter Morris has penned the script and the production is set to be directed by Paul Roseby, with various talented performers appearing on stage. And as this is a production of the National Youth Theatre audiences can expect to be seeing the work of rising stars, hoping to follow in the footsteps of the various well known names that began their careers with the company.
Oscar Wilde’s story is retold in an age of social media and mobile phones, with the ‘selfie’ becoming a cultural phenomenon. This time Dorian is still a vain man troubled my doubt, but in a contemporary setting, there is more to this tale than ever before.
The original story was published in 1890 and is remembered as one of the most beloved by Oscar Wilde during his career. His only novel, it has been widely influential and remains a well known piece even to this day, more than 120 years since it was published.
And it lands at the Ambassadors during a season that also includes a reinterpretation of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and a staging of Michael Morpurgo’s Private Peaceful. The former relocates the action to the time of empires prior to the First World War.
And the National Youth Theatre is a company that audiences will flock to see. After all, this is where some of the country’s best known actors made their initial mark on the scene, from Timothy Dalton to Matt Lucas, and it remains a place to see some future stars take to the stage.
Selfie is at the Ambassadors Theatre from Wednesday 17th September 2014.
