The Duchess Theatre in London’s West End briefly becomes the home of a Triple Bill of Samuel Beckett’s works – Not I, Footfalls and Rockaby. The production features the acting talents of Lisa Dwan, who first appeared in a version of Not I in 2005, and German director Walter Asmus leading the way, ensuring that those picking up theatre tickets for the February showcase will have plenty to enjoy when it lands on the stage.
All three, of course, are famous monologues which will certainly test the acting skills of star Dwan. For Not I she delivers stream of consciousness speeches in a dark, atmospheric setting whilst Footfalls features a woman pacing outside of her mother’s room, where she lies on her deathbed. Finally, the famous Rockaby features an old woman in a rocking chair, exploring loneliness and drawing upon Beckett’s own life.
Lisa Dwan, in addition to previously appearing in Not I at the Battersea Arts Centre in 2005, has appeared in a wealth of roles during her career, including the Irish television series Rock Rivals. Meanwhile, director Walter Asmus has famously worked with Beckett himself and worked on the first version of Waiting For Godot back in the 1970s. As such there is no-one better to handle the Irish writer’s work in the 21st century.
Not I, Footfalls and Rockaby appear at the Royal Court Theatre prior to their arrival at the West End’s Duchess Theatre on Monday 3rd February 2014. The evening is one of many to appear at the venue this year, with The Wind in the Willows appearing earlier in the year and Tell Me On A Sunday running later in February.
