Otello

Important Info: Sung in Italian with English surtitles. Please note, Jonas Kaufman will not be appearing on 8, 12 and 15 July performances.

The National Theatre is the host to a hugely successful production of Othello, with Adrian Lester and Rory Kinear in lead roles. The classic Shakespearean production is in safe hands on South Bank where not only have some high quality actors been employed to bring new life to popular characters but a creative team led by Nicholas Hytner ensures audiences have plenty of reasons to pick up theatre tickets.

Shakespeare’s classic play focuses on Othello as he attempts to defend Cyprus from the Turks whilst one of his subordinates, Iago, seeks revenge for his lack of promotion, bringing to life a rumour that Othello’s wife Desdemona and the man actually promoted, Cassio, are having an affair.

Adrian Lester has appeared in a wealth of roles over the years, with The Last of the Haussmans among his National Theatre credits, plus movie s such as Primary Colours, The Day After Tomorrow and As You Like It among his screen credits.

Rory Kinnear, meanwhile, has also amassed numerous roles, from those with the Royal Shakespeare Company to screen credits in the Bond movies (he played Bill Tanner in Quantum Of Solace and Skyfall). His high profile stage roles in recent years include his Olivier-nominated turn in Burnt By The Sun at the National and his win for The Man of Mode, also at the National, in 2008.

In a year that also welcomes The Amen Corner, among other shows, to the National Theatre, Othello continues its strong run at the Olivier Theatre well into the summer.
